I bought this record after seeing the video for This Is Love. Still have it plus all the records I collected all through the 80’s. I loved finding obscure bands like Wire Train, Glass Tiger, Psuedo Echo, Bang Bang…even Nik Kershaw. The 80’s were the best. One band I loved that was famous in England is New Model Army.

I have been listening to popular music since 1959 when I was four years old and my dear sainted grandma turned on the enormous old radio (called a wireless in Australia) and stood me in front of it to hear Doris Day singing Que Sera, Sera. How many tens of thousands of songs have I listened to over the decades since? So I picked up Life Part II on vinyl in the mid-eighties after seeing the video of This is Love on MTV. I played the rest of the album on my turntable. Rodeo, Shilo, Religious Holiday were punchy and melodic and great but then I got to *Dark Intentions* at the end. I was somehow teleported to the 1920s to hear a scratchy old 78 rpm recording of a sad waltzy ballad with an impossibly evocative French horn(?) solo and a wistful piano and lyrical references to cable cars and rain. Julian’s voice, softer and different in this song, almost cracks in the retelling of an overnight romantic episode: “Daybreak / Oh what a sight / But without you / I’m in the dark.” Please listen to it at 38:30 Never have I heard anything like it, before or since, during my sixty-plus years of listening to music. When have I ever been so touched by a song? (Only Jethro Tull’s Heavy Horses and Slow Marching Band come to mind, along with a few others, like Vincent by Don McLean and Abraham, Martin and John by Dion.) Thank you, Julian.
